ACTIVITIES - SCUBA DIVING

The most popular dive at Montague Island is with the seals. It is a great dive for all levels, which can be joined by snorkellers.

There are two seal colonies at Montague Island. In winter and spring there may be a total of 1500 of these furry creatures lounging around the rocks and frolicking in the water. Many of them migrate, but there remains a core of 100 or so all year. It is a non-breeding colony and the pups we see there are not newborns, (only 2 in the last 5 years) so there is No dangerous shark problem. These cheeky, inquisitive animals with their big brown eyes are usually not at all shy with small dive groups and will come right over to the divers. They are amazing to watch as they play together - spinning , twirling, diving - one instant there, the next they are gone.

Montague Island is situated on the overlap of oceanic zones resulting in a multitude of tropical, sub-tropical and cold water species. Here you will find at various times of the year Manta Rays, Wobbegongs, Bull Rays, turtles, Port Jackson and Grey Nurse sharks as well as schools of tropical fish, octopus, cuttlefish and nautilus. Various dive sites have hard or soft corals, sea tulips and exquisite fans.

There are heaps of dive sites to choose from - each with its own kind of magic! There are amazing formations at spots like The Cathedral , the Pinnacles and the Bubble Cave.

For advanced divers, there is a wreck dive. The "SS Lady Darling" was discovered by Paul Mood and Bert Elswyk (formerly of Island Charters) in 1996. Sunk in 1880, it now lies in 30 metres of water, on a bed of sand and is covered in invertebrate life. It is a photographer's dream. At present we are one of only 2 operators with a permit to dive the site.

Owner -operator, Martin, is himself a keen diver and knows the sites well. Your safety, comfort and enjoyment are of prime importance to him.

We specialise in smaller groups and will go out with just 4 divers. This means a friendlier tour where individual preferences can be catered for. We take up to eleven divers.

We have access to another boat of similar size, so we can cater for groups of up to 22 divers, yet you still have the advantages of the smaller boat.

Visibility around Montague Island is commonly over 20 metres and when the northerly currents sweep down it can reach incredible proportions with divers visible from one dive site to the next.

Water temperatures reach 25 degrees in summer and autumn. We find 5mm wetsuits adequate most winter days.

There are even more reasons to dive at Montague - Come and see for yourself! You won't be disappointed!!!
